MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College football team dropped its season opener to Stevenson University, 34-0, on Friday night at Walter M. Katz Field.
After a scoreless first quarter and a turnover on downs, the Mustangs capitalized on a five-yard touchdown rush by sophomore Kevin Joppy (Germantown, Md.) to put the visitors up 6-0. Classmate Kevin Sheehan (Landenburg, Pa.) tacked on the point-after to make it 7-0. Stevenson added another score as freshman Saadiq Pitts (Clifton, N.J.) scampered in from a yard out to cap an eight-play, 68-yard series to push the score to 13-0. Sophomore Ian Gould (Finksburg, Md.) missed the extra point to keep the deficit at 13. The Mustangs pushed the lead to 20-0 following a 40-yard interception return by senior Izaiha Pitts (Clifton, N.J.). Sheehan added the point-after to make the score 20-0 at the half.
On Stevenson's second drive of the second half, sophomore quarterback Ryan Sedgewick (Crofton, Md.) found the end zone on a one-yard rush to cap a 16-play drive that spanned 6:27. For the final score of the game, Sedgewick connected with senior Chaz Lyles (Washington, D.C.) for a 28-yard touchdown.
Sedgewick led the Mustang offense going 11-for-17 for 144 yards and one touchdown in the air and one on the ground. Joppy turned in a solid performance in the running attack with 95 yards on 22 carries and one touchdown. Lyles finished the contest as the leading receiver with eight receptions for 98 yards and a score.
For Curry, senior Nick Juvelier (Centereach, N.Y.) completed 17 of his 35 throws for 127 yards and two interceptions. On the ground, junior running back Zach Levy (Bellingham, Mass.) went for 32 yards on two carries, which was a high for the Colonels. Senior Mike DelGais (East Rockaway, N.Y.) finished the game with a team-high 68 yards on nine receptions.
On defense, Stevenson was paced by junior Garston Banks (Owings Mills, Md.) with seven solo stops. Curry's defense was led by freshman Blake Schader (Assonet, Mass.), who amassed a team-high eight tackles (five solo).
Curry will hit the road as they travel to Franklin Pierce University on Saturday, September 14 for a noon kickoff. Stevenson returns home to host Bridgewater (Va.) on Saturday at 7:00.
