MILTON, Mass. – Curry College dominated visiting Anna Maria College, 41-7, in non-conference action Saturday afternoon in Milton. With the win, the Colonels improve to 2-1 overall while the AMCATS fall to 0-3 on the season.
After a scoreless first drive from Curry, Anna Maria took over possession at their own 31-yard line. On the first play of the drive, Davante' Thomas (Norwalk, Conn.) picked off a pass from Alex Cohen (Plymouth, Mass.) and returned it all the way to the six-yard line. The Colonels only needed two plays to score as D'Aundray Burcy (Hyde Park, Mass.) had a rush for three yards and then Nick Juvelier (Centereach, N.Y.) finished off the drive with a three-yard scamper to put the Colonels up 6-0. Nick Oliveira (East Providence, R.I.) converted the extra point to extend the lead to 7-0.
After the AMCATS went three-and-out on the next drive, Curry drove 54 yards in seven plays with Zach Levy (Bellingham, Mass.) running it in from 27 yards out for his first rushing touchdown of the game.
The next scoring came in the second quarter as Levy capped off a four-play, 30-yard drive with a rush from 19 yards out and with another successful point-after from Oliveira, the Colonels would find themselves up 21-0.
Anna Maria would only travel 34 yards on the following drive before Cohen was intercepted by Devin Williams (Gardner, Mass.) and returned for three yards. Curry capitalized on the takeaway and only needed one play before Juvelier connected with wideout Nick Villanueva (Hanson, Mass.) for a 75-yard touchdown strike to push the score to 27-0. Oliveira's point after was no good as the lead remained 27.
With one and a half minutes left in the half, Juvelier found Mike DelGais (East Rockaway, N.Y.) for a one-yard gain to the end zone for DelGais' first receiving touchdown on the year. Curry would tack on the extra point to send the game into halftime with a 34-0 score.
To begin the third quarter, the AMCATS received the kickoff but could not do anything with the possession. The next scoring play came more than halfway through the third quarter as Juvelier connected with Dylan Vieira-Owens (Everett, Mass.) from 11 yards out and with another Oliveira extra point, the score was pushed to 41-0. Cote led a 78-yard drive on seven plays, finishing with a 32-yard touchdown pass to junior Nate Chartrand (Pelham, N.H.), increasing the Curry advantage to 35-0.
Anna Maria would get on the board with a nine-play, 72-yard drive with Cohen finding sophomore Marcelino Da Veiga (Central Falls, R.I.) from 28 yards out to put the AMCATS on the board. That touchdown would be the final scoring of the contest as the Colonels took it by a 34-point margin.
Curry was led by Juvelier who finished with 15 completions on 20 attempts for 219 yards, three passing touchdowns, and one rushing touchdown. Levy led the running game as he recorded 81 yards on 14 attempts and two touchdowns. Vieira Owens caught four total passes for 31 yards and one score while Villanueva racked up 81 yards on two catches and a touchdown. DelGais collected 30 yards on four receptions and a receiving touchdown.
Joseph Patti (Woburn, Mass.) and Williams led the Colonels with six and five tackles, respectively while Williams also recorded one sack for seven yards and one interception.
The AMCATS were led offensively by Cohen who threw for 82 yards on five completions, a touchdown, and three interceptions. Jalin Hudson (Syracuse, N.Y.) led the ground attack, amassing 77 yards on 22 attempts. Da Veiga caught two passes for 32 and a touchdown.
Tyshawn Anderson (Lynn, Mass.) led Anna Maria defensively with 10 total tackles and was followed closely by Nedron Payne (Waterbury, Conn.) with seven total tackles. Darrin Cooper (Fulton, N.Y.) racked up five tackles with two pass break-ups.
Curry travels to Union (N.Y.) next Saturday for a non-conference tilt kicking off at 1:00 p.m. Anna Maria returns to conference action next Saturday as well, as they travel to Western New England for a 1:00 p.m. start.
