MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College football team suffered its first loss of the season, falling to visiting MIT by a final score of 16-6 on Friday night at Walter M. Katz Field. The win pushes the Engineers to 2-0 while the Colonels slip to 1-1.
After a scoreless first quarter that saw each team with possession three times, MIT was the first to strike in the second stanza. Jack Montinaro (Riverside, Conn.) hauled in a 25-yard touchdown pass from Udgam Goyal (Frisco, Texas) to cap a 9-play 81-yard drive in 3:15 to put the Engineers up, 6-0. The point after attempt was converted by Mark Wright (Fort Worth, Texas) to extend the lead to 7-0.
The next drive resulting in scoring came in the third quarter, thanks to a 21-yard burst from Miguel Wagner (El Segundo, Calif.) to finish off a four play, 32-yard drive in just 1:32.
Curry was able to jump on the board on the following drive in the third stanza. Nick Juvelier (Centereach, N.Y.) was able to lead the Colonels on a six-play, 70-yard drive capped off by a 26-yard touchdown pass from Juvelier to Nick Villanueva (Hanson, Mass.) to trim the lead to eight. The ensuing extra point was blocked to keep the game with the eight-point margin.
The MIT defense stood strong for the final moments of the contest, limiting the Colonel offense to no points and forcing a safety to finish the contest by a 16-6 final.
Goyal led the Engineers through the air, going 19-of-31 for 179 yards along with one touchdown and one interception. Wagner paced the ground game with 97 yards on 30 carries with one touchdown. Keithen Shepard (Vancouver, Wash.) led the MIT receivers with 82 yards in nine receptions. Defensively, Mitch Maisel (Newtown, Pa.) registered a team-high seven tackles (six solo, one assisted) and forced one fumble.
Curry was led by its quarterback Juvelier, pacing the offense with 141 yards passing on 15-of-25. Zach Levy (Bellingham, Mass.) finished the contest with 34 rushing yards while Villanueva pulled in four receptions for 81 yards and a score. Hunter Atwood (Reading, Mass.) led all Colonel defenders with a game-high nine tackles.
MIT was able to possess the ball for 37:16 while registering 292 yards of total offense while Curry put up 211 yards in 22:44.
Curry will return to the field on Saturday, September 15 at home against Anna Maria at 1:00 p.m. MIT will next play at Endicott on September 15 at noon.
