Football Defeats Salve Regina in Regular Season Finale, 37-20, Await Bowl Announcement

NEWPORT, R.I. – Led by senior quarterback Alex Corvese's five touchdown passes the Curry College football team defeated Salve Regina University 37-20 in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) matchup at Toppa Field.

Salve Regina leads the all-time series 16-9 however the Colonels snap a seven-game losing streak to the Seahawks.

Three Stars of the Game

1.            Corvese (Cranston, R.I.) completed 25 of 33 passes to six different receivers for 347 yards with five touchdowns and one interception.

2.            Curry sophomore Nick Villanueva (Hanson, Mass.) caught six passes for 90 yards and three touchdowns.

3.            Salve Regina senior Connor Sullivan (Lowell, Mass.) caught eight passes for 154 yards and two touchdowns.

Key Stat of the Game

The Colonels generated 540 yards of offense and had the ball for nearly nine minutes more than the Seahawks.

Turning Point

The Colonels scored three unanswered touchdowns spanning halftime to take a 30-14 lead with 1:32 left in the third quarter. The Seahawks quickly drove 70 yards in nine plays, capped by a Danny McDermott (Franklin, Mass.) touchdown pass to Connor Sullivan to draw the Seahawks within 10 points, 30-20 with 12:54 remaining in the fourth quarter. After both teams had short drives stall, the Colonels got the ball back with 8:32 left, still holding a 10 point lead. A nine-play 83-yard drive led to a 31-yard touchdown from Corvese to Villanueva on fourth and one to make it a three possession game, 37-20 with only 3:39 remaining. The Seahawks final drive moved 56 yards in 11 plays, but McDermott was picked off in the end zone by Cameron Sass (Bridgewater, Mass.) to seal the victory for Curry.

Quick Hits

•             McDermott finished the day completing 23 of 43 passes for 289 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception.

•             Jake Gelb (Charlton, Mass.) rushed 11 times for 32 yards while sophomore Ronnie Martin (Foxboro, Mass.) gained 37 yards on eight carries and score a touchdown.

•             Sean Amaru (Westwood, Mass.) gained 128 yards on 15 carries (8.5 yards per rush average) to lead the Colonels rushing attack.

•             Mike DelGais (East Rockaway, N.Y.) led the Colonels in receptions, hauling in seven passes for 135 yards and one touchdown.

•             The Seahawks were limited to 360 yards of offense and just 71 yards rushing while the Colonels gained 193 yards on the ground and 347 through the air.

•             Nathan Gonzalez (Durham, Conn.) notched 11 tackles while Connor Russo (Franklin Lakes, N.J.) totaled 10 tackles and picked off Alex Corvese on the game's opening drive to lead the Seahawks defense.

•             Sass made eight solo tackles in the game to pace the Curry defense.

With the victory, Curry closes the regular season with an 8-2 overall record, with a 4-1 mark in the inaugural season CCC Football. The Colonels await the announcement of the bowl game field on Sunday to see where they will be headed and who they will face. Salve Regina closes the regular season with a 6-3 overall record with a 3-2 mark in conference play.
