MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College football team took down visiting Nichols College, 46-16 in Commonwealth Coast Football action at Walter M. Katz Field on Saturday afternoon. The Colonels improve to 6-1 and 2-0 in league play on the year while the Bison fall to 2-5 overall and 0-2 in conference action.

Curry got on the board first, putting together a 10 play, 64-yard drive that culminated in a 30-yard touchdown pass from Alex Corvese (Cranston, R.I.) to Nick Villanueva (Hanson, Mass.) to put the Colonels up 6-0. Curry converted a two-point conversion following the score to go up eight in the early going. Nichols came right back with a score of their own, capping an eight-play, 62 yard series with a one-yard rush from Tony Martignoli (Santa Rosa, Calif.). The extra point try from Alex Santiago (Sunrise, Fla.) split the uprights to help the Bison cut the deficit to one heading into the second quarter.

The next scoring would come in the second quarter when Marc Mrozek (Stratford, Conn.) converted on a field goal from 25 yards out to increase the lead to four at 11-7. The field goal capped off an eight-play, 49-yard drive that spanned 3:20. The squads traded possessions before either team would find the end zone again. Following a 41 yard punt by Brett McEvoy (Wrentham, Mass.), the Colonels wasted little time to increase the lead. Curry only needed one play when Corvese found Philip Lebel (Wolcott, Conn.) on a 44-yard strike to put the home team up by 10, 17-7. The extra point try from Mrozek was good as the lead got pushed to 11.  The Bison answered back quickly when they went 63 yards in nine plays and 2:47. The drive was finished off by a 27-yard field goal attempt from Santiago as the Curry lead was trimmed to 18-10 heading into the halftime intermission.

Following a three-and-out for Nichols to open up the action in the second half, Corvese got help from D'Aundray Burcy (Hyde Park, Mass.) and Mike DelGais (East Rockaway, N.Y.) to move the ball down the field. A 25-yard reception by DelGais and a 27 yard rush from Burcy set up the Colonels at the Nichols eight-yard line. Corvese found the end zone on a rushing attempt to put Curry up 25-10 including the successful extra point.

Nichols got the ball back following the touchdown, but it was quickly back in the hands of the Colonels. After three plays by the Bison, Steven Grogan (Forestdale, Mass.) forced a fumble by Crème Watford (Meriden, Conn.) which was recovered by Curry's Jack O'Rourke (North Falmouth, Mass.) Following the turnover, the Colonels set up shop at their own 44. They used nine plays and 56 yards to increase the lead to 32-10 after Corvese connected with Lebel for a 12-yard touchdown pass.

After the squads traded possessions to close the third stanza, Curry struck first in the final quarter. A completion from Corvese to Steven Elice (Stoughton, Mass.) put the Colonels inside the red zone with just before the end of the third quarter, but the drive would be finished off when Corvese found Lebel for the third time on a 10 yard strike. Following the point after, Curry led 39-10.

The Bison found the end zone one more time before the end of the contest. With 5:40 remaining in regulation, Cameron Hamilton (Mattapoisett, Mass.) found Eric Mooney (Stoneham, Mass.) from eight yards out to make the score, 39-16.

The Colonels had the answer for Nichols' final score with one of their own. Nick Juvelier (Centereach, N.Y.) finished off a six-play, 57 yard series with a rush from eight yards out to find the end zone. After a Mrozek extra point, the score of the contest was 46-16, which turned out to be the final score.

Curry's offense was paced by Corvese, who went 17-for-32 for 250 yards, four touchdowns, and no interceptions. Corvese added eight rushes for 13 yards and one touchdown. D'Aundray Burcy (Hyde Park, Mass.) led the Colonels running backs with 72 yards on 10 carries. Villanueva led all Curry receivers with three receptions for 67 yards and one touchdown. On the defensive side, the Colonels were led by Grogan, who tallied eight tackles (seven solo, one assisted), one sack and forced one fumble.

For the Bison, Hamilton led the way, completing 10-of-17 attempts for 145 yards and one touchdown. Jacob Duffrene (Boston, Mass.) led the charge on the ground, rushing 11 times for 52 yards. Martignoli was the leading receiver, hauling in three receptions for 75 yards. McEvoy led all players with a game-high 12 tackles (seven solo, five assisted).

Curry looks to continue momentum on Saturday, October 28 when they continue conference play at Endicott at 12:00 p.m. Nichols will next play on Saturday when they host Becker at 12:00 p.m.
