Curry has surprised a number of people with its impressive 4-1 start to the Division 3 football season.

The Colonels play their first Commonwealth Coast Conference game of the season on Saturday against Becker in Leicester. Curry was No. 7 in last week's Grinold Chapter New England Div. 3 football weekly poll.

Much of the Colonels' success can be attributed to the emergence of senior quarterback Alex Corvese of Cranston, R.I.

In Saturday's 30-27 win over UMass-Dartmouth, he accounted for four scores, two through the air and two on runs of 1 yard and 3 yards. On the day, he was 29-of-44 passing for 377 yards.

On the season, Corvese has completed 97-of-156 passes (62.2 percent) for 1,039 yards with eight touchdown passes and three interceptions. He is averaging 207.8 passing yards per game and owns a pass-efficiency rating of 113.2.

Not only is he a threat with his arm, but he is a danger to opponents with his legs, running for seven touchdowns.

Spencer Tyler of Yarmouthport is the prime target with 34 grabs for 382 yards and a pair of scores.

Veteran quarterbacks coach Dick Yule is quick to point out, though, that the run game has been integral in setting up the pass.

"The difference this year has been that we've been able to run the football," said Yule.

Sophomore D'Aundray Burcy of Hyde Park, a former Herald All-Scholastic while at Reading Memorial High School, averages 4.9 yards per carry while junior Sean Amaru of Westwood has an 358 yards on 64 carries for a solid 5.6 average.
