Corvese Carries Football to 47-20 Victory Over Anna Maria in Non-Conference Play

PAXTON, Mass. – The Curry College football team improved to 3-0 on the season, defeating Anna Maria College by a final of 47-20 on Friday evening. Alex Corvese (Cranston, R.I.) lifted the visitors to victory with 91 rushing yards and 183 passing yards, totaling 274 offensive yards on the night.

The Basics:

 How It Happened:

First Half

-The Colonels got on the board just three minutes into the first quarter with a 36-yard complete pass from senior quarterback, Alex Corvese to junior wide receiver Dylan Vieira-Owens (Everett, Mass.). Marc Mrozek (Stratford, Conn.) earned the extra point to give the visitors an early 7-0 lead.

-With 7:58 on the clock Curry struck again. Sean Amaru (Westwood, Mass.) broke away from the AMCAT defense and rushed for 47 yards and the extra point from Mrozek was good for the Colonel's 14-0 lead.

-Curry extended their lead to 21-0 following a complete pass to Steven Elice (Stoughton, Mass.) who ran for 65 yards for the touchdown with 4:39 to go in the first (21-0).

-Just a minute and a half into the second quarter the visitors finished on a third and goal attempt as Corvese ran it one yard into the end zone for the 28-0 lead.

-Corvese headed down the field again with less than nine minutes on the clock; this time running the ball 50 yards to put the Colonels in scoring position at the Anna Maria 20-yard line.

-After the AMCATS forced an incomplete pass on a Colonel 3rd down Mrozek made a 37-yard field goal to boost their lead to 31-0 with 8:40 on the clock in the second quarter.

-The Colonels were able to sneak in one more scoring play before the halftime break. Corvese rushed for a total of 15 yards in the play to extend the visitor's lead to 37-0.

Second Half

-With 8:45 on the clock in the third quarter Mrozek made a 32-yard field goal to bring the score to 40-0.

-Peter Gallant (Gardner, Mass.) rushed for seven yards for another Colonel touchdown with just 39 seconds on clock in the third quarter. The extra point was good and Curry took the 47-0 lead.

-Anna Maria broke the shut out early in the fourth quarter. Emmanuel Leake (Providence, R.I.) started the play with a nine-yard rush to the Colonel's 11-yard line. D'Onofrio ran the ball into the endzone and Marcelino Da Veiga (Central Falls, R.I.) made the extra point attempt to bring the score to 47-7 with 12:27 to play in the game.

-The AMCATS struck again just two minutes later after Brian McLean (Montgomery, Ala.) recovered a Curry fumble and ran it 47 yards for an AMCAT touchdown. Da Veiga made his second extra point of the day (47-14).

-Anna Maria did not let up and charged back down the field with less than seven minutes on the clock. Freshman quarterback, Jayson Wallace (Rochester, N.Y.) tossed a 32-yard touchdown pass to senior captain, Trai Weaver (Waterbury, Conn.) to close the gap to 47-20.

 Inside the Numbers:

-The Colonels posted 259 total yards by the end of the first quarter while the AMCATS posted just 15 total yards.

-The visitors went five for five in completion attempts while the AMCATS went four for seven in the first quarter.

-Anna Maria posted the one and only sack of the first quarter for a Colonel loss of 11 yards.

The Colonels finished the first half with 380 total yards including 214 rushing yards.

-The AMCATS completed five of 15 passing attempts in the first half.

-Joseph D'Onofrio (Everett, Mass.) led the AMCATS with six rushing yards in the first half while Trai Weaver checked in with 23 receiving yards for Anna Maria.

-Corvese earned a total of 166 yards and Amaru led the visitors with 89 rushing yards in the first half.  Saab posted 65 receiving yards in the first 30 minutes of play.

-Curry finished the night with a total of 526 yards while the AMCATS finished with 175 total yards.

-Corvese completed nine of 14 passes for 183 yards and rushed for 91 yards. Saab posted 65 receiving yards.

-Leake completed seven of 18 passes for 55 yards while Wallace completed two of seven for 38 yards.

-Freshman Noah Vinci (Higganum, Conn) led the AMCATS with 40 rushing yards while D'Onofrio finished with 35.

-Weaver finished the night with 64 receiving yards.
