CAMBRIDGE, Mass.-On Senior Day at Steinbrenner Stadium, the MIT football team picked up its second straight win with a 26-21 victory over visiting Curry College on Saturday afternoon. The win evens the team's NEFC record at 3-3 heading into next weekend's season finale.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Prior to the start of the game, the Engineers honored 12 members of the MIT football program who were participating in their final career home game on Saturday.
- Curry opened the game with an 11-play, 76-yard drive that was capped off by a one-yard quarterback keeper by Alex Corvese (Cranston, R.I.) just 4:54 into the game. After the game went to the half at 7-0, MIT got on the board midway through the third quarter as freshman John Robertson (Brentwood, Tenn.) punched in a two-yard touchdown with 7:09 on the clock. The run was set up by a 22-yard catch across the middle from freshman Eric Bradford (Dublin, Ohio) and capped the 65-yard, nine-play drive.
- On the ensuing drive, MIT blocked the Curry punt and junior Kyle Pina (South Yarmouth, Mass.) recovered at the 34-yard line. The Engineers turned that into points just 1:19 later as Robertson scored his second touchdown of the game for the 14-7 lead.
- MIT forced a fumble late in the third and turned that into points as well as senior Tucker Cheyne (Avon, Conn.) converted a 37-yard field goal for a 17-7 lead.
- On Curry's next drive, the Colonels needed just four plays to march 73 yards and cut the lead to 17-14. Highlighting the drive was a 56-yard pass to Dean Anderson (Melrose, Mass.) that got the visitors down into the red zone. Corvese capped the drive with an 11-yard touchdown pass to Anthony Nastasi (River Edge, N.J.) in the right corner of the end zone with 10:04 remaining.
- MIT pushed the lead into double digits at 26-14 with a 33-yard Cheyne field goal, followed by the third touchdown of the day by Robertson with just 1:38 remaining. Curry pulled to within five with 12 seconds remaining as Corvese scored from one yard out to end a 73-yard drive, but the ensuing onside kick attempt was recovered by MIT's Mitch Turley (Westfield, Ind.) to seal the win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Robertson led MIT on the ground with a career-high 167-yard effort that included three touchdowns. This marks the third straight 100-yard game for Robertson. Overall, the Engineers outgained the Colonels by a 251-126 margin on the ground.
- Corvese completed 31-of-49 passes for 334 yards and one touchdown, while sophomore Udgam Goyal (Frisco, Texas) completed 12 passes for 106 yards that included a team-high eight passes for 77 yards to Bradford.
- Nastasi was the top receiver for Curry as he had 14 receptions for 165 yards as five different receivers had catches for the visitors. Corvese was the team leader in rushing for Curry as well as he posted 94 yards and a pair of touchdowns on the grond.
- Senor Kodiak Brush (Yorba Linda, Calif.) led the MIT defense with 15 tackles that included six solo stops, one sack and two tackles for loss. Senior Tremaan Robbins (Long Beach, Calif.) also finished with double figures in tackles and he had 10 on the day. For Curry, Steven Grogan (Forestdale, Mass.) was the top tackler with 15 as three Colonels finished with double-digit tackles.
Curry (3-5, 1-5 NEFC) will return home Saturday for their regular season when they host Endicott at 1 p.m at Walter M. Katz Field.
