Curry Drops NEFC Opener

Springfield, Mass- The Curry College Football team suffered a 59-28 loss to Western New England University in Springfield on Saturday afternoon. Junior quarterback Alex Corvese (Cranston, R.I.) led three scoring drives for the Colonels while going 22-for-33 through the air for a total of 279 yards. Jake Cawlina was the quarterback's top target, bringing in four catches for a total of 144 yards and two touchdowns.

Following a three-and-out on the first Curry possession, the Golden Bears marched down the field in an seven-play, 83 yard drive to open the scoring. Western New England would add to their lead less than a minute later when Sam Olsson picked off a pass from Corvese and returned it 44 yards for the touchdown. The Golden Bears would add two scores to go up by four touchdowns, but Curry would respond.

The Colonels rallied late in the first half, scoring three touchdowns over the final three minutes to cut the Golden Bear deficit to 14. Corvese orchestrated an eight-play, 47 yard drive finished off by a five yard touchdown pass to Dylan Viera-Owens (Everett, Mass.). But Western New England would answer right back with an 80-yard touchdown pass from Anthony Service to Mark Dietrich. With just 54 seconds remaining in the first half, Corvese found Jake Cawlina for a 24-yard score. In the closing seconds of the first half, Steven Grogan (Forestdale, Mass.) intercepted a pass from Service and returned it 63 yards to the house.

In third quarter action, Service continued his career day with two more touchdown passes to extend the Western New England lead to 28. But Corvese and the Colonels would answer back with a 53-yard score by Cawlina to cap the scoring for Curry.

Both teams return to the field next Saturday when Curry (2-1, 0-1 NEFC) returns home to host Salve Regina while Western New England will be on the road at Nichols. Both games are set to begin at 1 p.m.
