MILTON, Mass. - (by Keith Regan, Special to the BBJ) - When a collegiate sports team adopts a critically ill child through the Team IMPACT program, the occasion is marked with plenty of fanfare. Teams stage press conferences, have kids sign letters of intent or outfit them in custom game gear. One college had all 500 of its student-athletes pack a gym for the occasion, with every athlete high-fiving the newly drafted youngster.
The Curry Colonels football squad welcomed Shane Heffernan as an honorary member of the Curry Colonels Football Team. Heffernan, 13, from nearby Braintree, Mass. was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis (CF) in 2004. Last April at the Walter M. Katz Field in Milton, the Curry Football coaches and players welcomed Shane as an honorary member of their team.
