Baseball Splits With Roger Williams
BRISTOL, R.I. – The Curry College baseball team split a conference doubleheader at Roger Williams University on Friday afternoon, winning the first game 7-4 in eight innings before dropping the second 11-1 in seven innings.
Game One – Curry 7, Roger Williams 4
The Hawks got on the board in the third when graduate student Joey Gulino (Meriden, Conn.) stole third and then scored on an error by senior catcher Dylan Ketterer (Plymouth, Mass.) to give Roger Williams the 1-0 advantage.
Senior Jared Keller (Oxford, Conn.) sparked a four-run fourth inning with an RBI double down the right field line that scored juniors Jason Leonard (Dedham, Mass.) and Julian Jaume (Staten Island, N.Y.). Following a sacrifice bunt from Ketterer, sophomore Conor Hanlon (Beverly, Mass.) singled to left field that scored Keller from third. Sophomore Peter Sylvia (Brockton, Mass.) then reached on a fielder's choice, which plated Hanlon to extend the lead to 4-1.
The squads then traded in the seventh. Jaume scored on a wild pitch for the first of the frame then Ketterer drove in two with a single to right center to increase the margin to six, 7-1.
Roger Williams got three runs back in the home half of the seventh. Senior Tyler Cedeno (Maynard, Mass.) singled through the right side to score graduate student Eddy Jackson (Seekonk, Mass.) and senior Brandon Jenkins (East Bridgewater, Mass.) delivered a two-run shot to right field for the final runs of the contest.
Curry senior starter Zachary Wensley (Raynham, Mass.) improved to 2-0 on the year. He struck out five batters over 6.1 innings and allowed four runs (all earned) on seven hits. Freshman Aaron Diaz (Port St. Lucie, Fla.) converted the save.
Jenkins paced the Hawk offense, going 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBI. Senior starter Connor Hewlette (Deer Park, N.Y.) took the loss, allowing four runs (all earned) on three hits over 4.2 innings.
Game Two – Roger Williams 11, Curry 1 (7 innings)
The Hawks bounced back with 13 hits in the nightcap. Curry trailed 7-0 heading into the fourth frame and a single down the third base line from freshman Joan Peralta (Brooklyn, N.Y.) to get the Colonels in the scoring column.
Roger Williams tacked on a pair of runs in the fifth and sixth innings to end the contest via the ten-run rule.
Junior Brett Bonavita (East Longmeadow, Mass.) collected his first win on the season. He struck out four and walked three over7.0 innings of work.
Curry senior starter Philip Ledwith (Old Saybrook, Conn.) suffered the loss, allowing six runs on three hits over 1.2 innings.
Curry (3-6 overall, 1-5 CCC) will host the same Roger Williams University (9-4 overall, 4-2 CCC) team on Saturday, April 3 in a doubleheader beginning at 11:00 a.m.
