AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Curry College baseball team suffered a 10-9 loss to Anna Maria College on Sunday afternoon at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational.

The Colonels (2-2 overall) trailed by four before rallying for four runs in the fourth inning to pull even with the AMACTS. Curry then jumped in front with a five-run fifth. Anna Maria rallied from down five to put up one in the sixth and five in the ninth to grab the one-run advantage (10-9). The Colonels were able to get the winning run aboard, but were unable to put it across.

Five student-athletes were tied for the team lead in hits for the Curry with senior Jared Keller (Oxford, Conn.), sophomore Jason Leonard (Dedham, Mass.), freshman John Trevino (Edinburg, Texas.), senior Adam Duarte (East Providence, R.I.), and sophomore Julian Jaume (Brooklyn, N.Y.) all finishing with one apiece.

Anna Maria (3-2 overall) hit up Curry sophomore starter Jack Needham (Raynham, Mass.) for three runs over the first 2.1 innings to take control. Junior Garrett Fosher (Exeter, N.H.) tossed the next 5.2 innings and gave up two runs on five hits. Sophomores Ryan Williams (Waltham, Mass.) and Michael Mulrean (Easton, Mass.) combined to throw the final frame with Williams being credited with the loss.

The AMCATS got on the scoreboard in the third on an RBI single by sophomore Kosta Drosidis (Holden, Mass.) that scored sophomore Zac Genovezos (Fairhaven, Mass.). Junior Nick Genatossio (Sutton, Mass.) drew a bases-loaded walk to plate senior Adam Twitchell (Shrewsbury, Mass.) while Fili Veras (Sleepy Hollow, N.Y.) singled to left field to send junior Noah Holland (Sandwich, Mass.) home for the 3-0 advantage. Anna Maria tacked on another in the fourth on an RBI single by Holland.  

The Colonels had the answer in the fourth, tallying four of their own. Leonard started the scoring with an RBI single down the left field line to score freshman Matthew Jones (Brooklyn, N.Y.). Curry then benefitted on errors on two of the next four batters to bring three runners across.

The Colonels exploded for a five-run fifth to grab a 9-4 lead. Trevino delivered a two-run single, junior Dylan Ketterer (Plymouth, Mass.) scored via a bases loaded walk, and Jaume had a two-RBI single.

After bringing one across in the sixth Anna Maria rallied for a five-run ninth and took advantage of two Curry errors. Senior Greg Gehring (Southold, N.Y.) singled to third base to score freshman Hezekiah Adeyeye (Woonsocket, R.I.) and Veras connected on a double down the left field line, which drove in two. Sophomore Jarrod Marifiote (Framingham, Mass.) delivered the eventual game-winning run with a pinch-hit, two-RBI single to left.

Curry had one last chance in the ninth as back-to-back walks put the go-ahead run on base. They were unable to push either across as they fell in the one-run contest.   

Curry will next play at in a doubleheader against Penn State Brandywine at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational on Monday, March 9 beginning at 9:00 a.m. Anna Maria remains at the RussMatt and will face D'Youville on Monday at 1:15 p.m.
