Baseball Edges Gators in Pitchers’ Duel

WEST ROXBURY, Mass. – The Curry College baseball team edged out Pine Manor College in a 2-1 final in the season opener at the Roxbury Latin School on Thursday afternoon.

The teams traded opened the scoring by runs in the fourth inning. After freshman John Trevino (Edinburg, Texas) flew out to left-center, sophomore Jason Leonard (Dedham, Mass.) connected on a home run to left field to give the Colonels a 1-0 lead.

The Gators found the equalizer in the bottom of the fourth. Senior Terry Daniels (Auburn, N.Y.) was the first to reach base in the frame via a walk. He then advanced to second on a passed ball to move into scoring position. Junior Evan Reynolds (Everett, Mass.) drew a walk to put two runners aboard with one out. Following a fielder's choice and a strikeout, junior Isaiah Mack (Montville, Conn.) singled through the left side which helped send Reynolds home to knot the contest at one.

The stalemate held until the eighth inning when junior pinch hitter Garrett Fosher (Exeter, N.H.) delivered a single up the middle. Senior Jhonathan Oliveira (Peabody, Mass.) scored from third on the play for the 2-1 Curry advantage.

Pine Manor brought the game-winning run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth, but junior Zachary Wensley (Raynham, Mass.) entered the game to get the final out on the hill, converting the save to preserve the one-run victory.

Sophomore Jack Needham (Raynham, Mass.) picked up the win on the hill, going three-and-two-thirds innings. He allowed two hits while walking three and striking out three. Senior Garrett Gagnon (Randolph, Vt.) was credited with the loss, surrendering one run on three hits over two innings. He walked three and fanned four in the setback.

Leonard had a pair of hits to pace the Colonels. Mack finished with a game-high three hits for the Gators.
