Leopards Use Long Ball to Power Past Baseball

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College baseball team lost a 7-2 decision to the visiting Wentworth Institute of Technology in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) play on Friday afternoon at the Jack Vallely Diamond. The win pushes the Leopards to 7-17 overall and 2-5 in the CCC while the Colonels fall to 9-15-1 overall and 1-5-1 in the league play.

Wentworth junior starting pitcher Ryan Obin (Plymouth, Mass.) turned in a strong performance, limiting the Curry offense to two runs on four hits while striking out five in a complete-game effort. The Leopards spotted him the early lead thanks to a sacrifice fly to right field by senior Jake Smith (Orange, Conn.), which drove in sophomore Aidan French (Chicago, Ill.). A leadoff home run from freshman Matt Bishop (Ballston Spa, N.Y.) to center field to pad the lead, 2-0.

Senior Andrew Elliott (Rockland, Mass.) used the long ball in the third inning, getting ahold of a two-run shot to center field to push the advantage to 4-0. The round-tripper also brought home freshman Nolan McManus (Milton, Mass.).

Elliott was back in the action in the fourth as he hit his second home run of the game with two on to extend the lead to 7-0. The homer was hit down the right-field line and also brought in junior Dan Mitchell (Avon, Mass.) and freshman Nate Ladeira (Fall River, Mass.).

The Colonels got on the board in the seventh and then added their final run in the ninth. Senior Spencer Cookson (Sheffield, Mass.) drove in classmate Tyler Jenkins (East Bridgewater, Mass.) for Curry's first run. Junior Adam Duarte (East Providence, R.I.) plated the last run on a single to center field in the ninth. The base knock scored Jenkins as the contest would end in a 7-2 final.

Freshman Julian Jaume (Brooklyn, N.Y.), Jenkins, Duarte, and Cookson each registered one hit on the afternoon for the Colonels. Elliott paced the Leopards at the plate, going 3-for-5 with two home runs, five RBI, and two runs scored.

Curry junior starter James Mello (Fall River, Mass.) yielded four runs (all earned) in 3.0 innings of work in the loss. Mello fanned four and walked one in the setback.

Curry will next travel to Gordon College on Saturday, April 13 for a conference doubleheader starting at noon. Wentworth hosts Nichols in a CCC doubleheader at Campanelli Stadium on Saturday beginning at noon.
