Baseball Blanks Becker in Non-Conference Action

LEICESTER, Mass. – The Curry College baseball team secured a 5-0 shut out over Becker College on Tuesday afternoon in non-conference play at Rochdale Park. With the win, the Colonels move to 7-10-1 overall while the Hawks slipped 7-11 overall.

Curry opened the scoring in the third inning on a single through the left side by senior Tyler Jenkins (East Bridgewater, Mass.) to plate freshman Julian Jaume (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and put the Colonels up 1-0.

Curry added to its lead in the fifth, extending the lead to 3-0. Jaume drew a one-out walk and then two batters later, freshman Jason Leonard (Dedham, Mass.) scored Jaume from first with a double to right center. Leonard eventually scored on a wild pitch to stretch the advantage.

The Colonels added two more in the visiting half of the sixth inning. Senior Michael Strizzi (Williamstown, Mass.) reached base on a hit by pitch to open the frame and then advanced to second on a passed ball. Strizzi eventually reached third on a balk. With one out, junior Adam Duarte (East Providence, R.I.) drew a walk and then stole second. After a groundout by junior Mitchell Carvalho (Cranston, R.I.), Jaume reached first on an error by junior Michael McMahon (Canton, Mass.). The miscue allowed Duarte and Strizzi to score to make the score 5-0, the eventual final.

Junior Jared Keller (Oxford, Conn.), Leonard, and Jenkins each had one hit to round out the column for Curry. Seniors Tanyon Ventres (Holden, Mass.) and Evan Barrera (West Warwick, R.I.) finished with two hits apiece for Becker.

Freshman pitcher Ryan Williams (Waltham, Mass.) registered the victory on the hill for the Colonels, tossing two innings. He allowed two hits and fanned one to move to 2-0 on the season. Becker junior pitcher Michael Martinez (Raleigh, Mass.) was tagged with the loss, giving up three runs (all earned) on three hits. He struck out one and walked four in the setback.

Curry will have a quick turnaround and will travel to Eastern Nazarene on Wednesday, April 3 for a non-league contest at 4:00 p.m. Becker will also be in action on Wednesday at home against Springfield at 4:00 p.m.
