KISSIMMEE, Fla. – Curry College and Ursinus College split a non-conference baseball doubleheader on Wednesday morning at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational. The Bears took the opener, 14-1, then the Colonels bounced back in second game, 7-6.

GAME ONE

The scoring was opened in the bottom half of the first inning when Jon Moldoff (West Chester, Pa.) doubled to right field scoring Carter Usowski (Buckingham, Pa.). Ursinus then put up five runs in the home half of the second. Mike Stanizale (North Haledon, N.J.) got things started with a two-run homer to left. The round tripper scored Will Peiffer (Downingtown, Pa.). Alex Mumme (Montgomery, N.J.) continued the offense with a two-RBI double to center field, which scored Dom Fiorentino (Ocean View, N.J.) and Dan Icaza (Whitehouse Station, N.J.). Moldoff came back up to the plate for his second at-bat of the frame and delivered a single up the middle to plate Mumme to go up 6-0.

Curry tallied its only run of the contest on a base hit from freshman Julian Jaume (Brooklyn, N.Y.). The base knock was able to score sophomore Dylan Ketterer (Plymouth, Mass.).

The Bears scored eight more runs in the contest, starting with two in the bottom of the third. Icaza kept the offense going with a two-RBI double to right center to score Peiffer and Jerry Scavone (Levittown, Pa.). Ursinus then tagged the Colonels for two more in the fourth and was capped off with four in the bottom of the fifth.

Peiffer tossed six innings on the mound, only giving up one run on four hits. Additionally, he struck out six and walked just one. Junior James Mello (Fall River, Mass.) was tagged with the loss for Curry. He lasted one and two-thirds innings, surrendering six runs on seven hits with two strikeouts and no walks.

GAME TWO

The second game saw a similar start with Ursinus jumping out to a 6-0 lead over the first three innings. Moldoff opened the scoring with an RBI single to score Florentino. Scavone continued the offense with a groundout into a double play. With the bases loaded, the play allowed Usowski to score. Peiffer capped off the frame with a triple to left center, which scored Mumme. The Bears found themselves back in the scoring column in the third with another three runs. Peiffer flied out to center, which was deep enough to plate Mumme. Stanizale converted a sacrifice bunt to plate Moldoff. Erik Gross (Warrington, Pa.) finished off the scoring with a single to right center to score Scavone.

Curry started to chip away at the deficit in the bottom of the third. Freshman Evan Leveroni (Sandown, N.H.) jumpstarted the hits with a single to left center. Junior Adam Duarte (East Providence, R.I.) followed with a single through the left side. Three batters later, junior Jared Keller (Oxford, Conn.) cashed in with two on with a single through the left side to plate Jaume and Duarte to make the score 6-2.

The Colonels added one in the sixth as Jaume reached on an error. The miscue allowed Leonard to score to trim the deficit to 6-3.

Curry then scored four in the bottom of the seventh to walk off with the victory. Leonard started things with a single to right center to score Keller. Ketterer followed with a single through the left side to plate Carvalho. Jaume drew a bases loaded walk to plate senior Spencer Cookson (Sheffield, Mass.) and senior Tyler Jenkins (East Bridgewater, Mass.) was hit by a pitch to send sophomore Garrett Fosher (Exeter, N.H.) home for the game-winning run.

Freshman Michael Mulrean (South Easton, Mass.) was credited with the victory on the hill, going the final four and a third innings. He fanned two and walked two in relief. Mark LeDuc (Fairfax, Va.) was given the loss, surrendering one run on one hit in two thirds of an inning.
