Baseball Edged By Simpson in Shootout

KISSIMMEE, Fla. — The Curry College baseball team dropped an 11-10 decision to Simpson College on Monday afternoon at Osceola Heritage Park.

After a scoreless first two innings, the Storm tagged the Colonels for four runs in the bottom of third. Kolton Arnold (Norwalk, Iowa) got Simpson on the board with an RBI single through the right side, which scored Zach Hollingsworth (Des Moines, Iowa). Truman Schmitt (Hinton, Iowa) followed with a two-run shot to left and then Brandon Urias (Des Moines, Iowa) capped up the scoring stretch with a single through the left side. The base knock plated Josh Breitbarth (Hilo, Hawaii).

Curry responded with three runs in the top of the fourth to cut the deficit to one, 4-3. Junior Mitchell Carvalho (Cranston, R.I.) got things started with a single up the middle. Senior Tyler Jenkins (East Bridgewater, Mass.) reached on a hit by pitch and then junior Jared Keller (Oxford, Conn.) plated Carvalho with an RBI double. Freshman Jason Leonard (Dedham, Mass.) continued the offense with a sacrifice fly to center to score Jenkins. Senior Jack Kallinich (Madison, Conn.) capped off the scoring with an RBI groundout to short to score Keller.

The Colonels jumped out in front in the fifth, with a six-run inning. Carvalho jumpstarted the bats with a two-RBI single through the left side to score senior Jhonathan Oliveira (Peabody, Mass.) and sophomore Dylan Ketterer (Plymouth, Mass.). Keller, Leonard, and Kallinich all reached base safely and were responsible for four runs scoring to put Curry up 9-4.

The Storm battled back and regained the lead in the bottom of the sixth, 11-9. Noah Sacco (Omaha, Neb.) singled through the right side to score Devin Creger (Altoona, Iowa) and Brady Held (Indianola, Iowa.). Arnold continued the offense after he reached on a fielder's choice, which helped plate Hollingsworth. Breitbarth, Urias, and Nathan Carlin (Huxley, Iowa) all added RBI hits to close out the scoring for Simpson.

Curry was able to get one run back in the eighth after Carvalho reached on a fielder's choice, which helped senior Michael Strizzi (Williamstown, Mass.) score. However, the Colonels were unable to plate the equalizer as Curry fell 11-10.

Simpson's Brett Kauzlarich (Centerville, Iowa) picked up the victory on the hill as he went four and two thirds innings. He gave up one run on two hits while striking three and walking one. Sophomore Zachary Wensley (Raynham, Mass.) was credited with the loss.

The Colonels will have an off day Tuesday and will return to action on Wednesday with a doubleheader against Ursinus starting at 9:00 a.m.
