Baseball Secures First Win Down South With Triumph Over Medaille

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The Curry College baseball team secured its first victory of its Spring Break trip in Florida with a 7-5 triumph over Medaille College on Sunday night at Osceola Heritage Park. The win pushes the Colonels to 2-3 overall while the Mavericks even up at 2-2.

The two sides traded three runs apiece in the first inning. Medaille jumped in front behind a bases clearing, three-run double by junior Shawn Filas (Hamburg, N.Y.). Curry quickly answered with a two-RBI triple by junior Jared Keller (Oxford, Conn.) and an RBI groundout by freshman Jason Leonard (Dedham, Mass.) to tie the game at 3-3.

The Mavericks regained the advantage in the top of the second on a single up the middle by Connor Priester (North Tonawanda, N.Y.). The base knock scored sophomore Patrick Gavigan (Orchard Park, N.Y) to put Medaille up 4-3. Priester was back in the action in the fourth with another RBI single to drive in Gavigan to push the lead to 5-3.

The Colonels scored the equalizers in the home half of the fourth. Junior Adam Duarte (East Providence, R.I.) singled up the middle, which scored freshmen Eric Sennott (Odessa, Fla.) and Leonard to knot the contest at five.

Curry pulled away for good on a pair of singles, one apiece from senior Tyler Jenkins (East Bridgewater, Mass.) and Keller to make the score 7-5, the eventual final.

Sophomore Garrett Fosher (Exeter, N.H.) earned his first collegiate win by allowing one runs on one hits over 7.0 innings. Derek Holtz (Akron, N.Y.) yielded seven runs on seven hits over 6.2 innings and struck out two in the loss.

Keller led the way for the Colonels, going a perfect 3-for-3 at the dish. Senior Jack Kallinich (Madison, Conn.) registered two hits on the afternoon as the final Curry student-athlete with multiple hits.

Curry will next play against Simpson College on Monday, March 11 at 1:15 p.m. at the RussMatt Invitational.
