Baseball Drops Two in Spring Break Opener

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Curry College baseball team dropped its first two games of its spring break trip at the RussMatt Invitational to Dickinson College on Saturday night at Lake Myrtle Park in Auburndale, Florida. The Red Devils took the first game 5-2 and then had a 4-3 come-from-behind victory in the nightcap.

Game One – Dickinson 5, Curry 2

Dickinson got on the board early in the contest with a ground-rule double from Alex Cohen (Newtown Square, Pa.), which scored Ben Carter (Wyomissing, Pa.) to give the Red Devils a 1-0 lead.

Dickinson added to its advantage in the fourth on a solo homer from Brian Reilly (Morganville, N.J.).

Leading 2-0 through four innings, the Colonels began to chip away at the deficit. Freshman Evan Leveroni (Sandown, N.H.) drove in Curry's first run on a groundout to short. The ball put in play allowed senior Tyler Jenkins (East Bridgewater, Mass.). The Colonels added the game-tying tally after senior Jack Kallinich (Madison, Conn.) scored on a passed ball.

The Red Devils did the rest of its damage in the sixth inning, registering three runs on two RBI singles and an RBI double for the 5-2 victory.

Teddy Reddington (Reston, Va.) picked up the win on the mound for Dickinson while sophomore Zach Wensley (Raynham, Mass.) was credited with the loss. Wensley went five innings and gave up four runs on eight hits. He struck out eight and walked two in the setback.

Game Two – Dickinson 4, Curry 3

Dickinson built a 2-0 advantage for the second straight game, this time spanning over the first five innings. Cohen opened the scoring with an RBI triple to score B. Carter. The Red Devils added to its lead in the fifth as B. Reilly scored on a wild pitch.

Curry tallied all of its runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 3-2 advantage. Junior Adam Duarte (East Providence, R.I.) took a pitch for a ride to left for a home run. Senior Jhonathan Oliveira (Peabody, Mass.) scored on a wild pitch later in the inning while Jenkins doubled to center to score junior Mitchell Carvalho (Cranston, R.I.).

Dickinson answered back in the top half of the sixth on a two-RBI double from the bat of Alex Jacobsen (Wilton, Conn.). The two-bagger scored Cohen and Max Matilsky (Bernardsville, N.J.).

Clayton Tennant (Danville, Calif.) picked up the victory on the hill, tossing only one inning of action. He did not allow a hit while striking out one and walking one. Junior James Mello (Fall River, Mass.) was credited the loss. He went five and two-thirds innings while striking out eight and walking three. He surrendered four runs on three hits.

The Colonels continue its Spring Break competition on Sunday, March 10 against Medialle at 5:45 p.m.
