MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College baseball team dropped its final two games of the 2018 season, falling to the Wentworth Institute of Technology in conference play on Tuesday afternoon. The Leopards took game one 8-7 and the nightcap by a 4-1 final.
The wins put Wentworth at 13-16 overall and 8-8 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) while the Colonels slip to 10-19 overall and 4-12 in the CCC.
Game One – Wentworth 8, Curry 7
The Leopards wasted little time getting on the scoreboard, posting five runs in the top of the first. Tyler Weninger (Chandler, Ariz.) got things started with a single through the right side to plate Owen Swanson (New Milford, Conn.). Bryon Kucharski (East Haven, Conn.) followed with a two-RBI single to score Andrew Elliott (Rockland, Mass.) and Weninger to put the visitors up 3-0. Dan Mitchell (Avon, Mass.) closed the scoring in the frame with a single up the middle to score Kucharski and Ross Golebiewski (Lyme, Conn.).
The next scoring opportunity came in the sixth as Wentworth put up three runs on two homers. Elliott had a solo shot to right field while Mitchell hit a two-run jack to increase the lead to 8-0.
Curry chipped away at the deficit, cutting the lead in half in the bottom of the sixth. Michael Couhig (Falmouth, Mass.) started the scoring with a single to center, which was deep enough to score Justin Cage (Glendora, Calif.). Tyler Jenkins (East Bridgewater, Mass.) scored on an error by the third baseman and Jack Kallinich (Madison, Conn.) reached on a fielder's choice as the play sent Couhig home to make the score, 8-3. John Cave (Tewksbury, Mass.) put an end to the scoring output in the frame with a two-run single to center, which plated Kallinich and Ketterer to put the score at 8-5 with one inning of regulation remaining.
The Colonels had two cross home in the seventh. Ketterer singled to center field to send Jenkins home while Adam Duarte (East Providence, R.I.) reached on a fielder's choice to score Couhig to pull Curry within one, but were unable to push the tying or winning runs across.
French and Mitchell paced the Leopards with two hits each. Jenkins finished with a game-high three hits while Couhig and Duarte registered two hits apiece.
Robby Sheldon (Dover, N.H.) was credited with the victory on the mound for Wentworth. The senior went five and two-thirds innings while giving up five runs on seven hits. He struck out five and walked none. Ryan Obin (Plymouth, Mass.) registered the save, tossing the final one and a third innings. He gave up two runs on four hits but was able to preserve the victory for the Leopards.
Robert Reedy (Cumberland, R.I.) picked up the loss, surrendering five runs on five hits. The senior fanned two and walked one.
Game Two – Wentworth 4, Curry 1
Wentworth was the first to strike in game two, grabbing a run off a sacrifice fly from Mitchell to score Golebiewski in the top of the second.
Curry knotted the game in the home half of the third as Cage singled to left field, which scored Mitchell Carvalho (Cranston, R.I.).
The Leopards broke the tie in the fourth after Anthony de la Cruz (Lynn, Mass.) drew a bases loaded walk to plate Elliott from third. Swanson drove in a run after he was hit by a pitch to push the lead to 3-1.
Wentworth would tack on one more before the end of the contest on a French sacrifice fly to right to score Cole Fritz (Peoria, Ariz.) in the sixth.
Weninger and Kyle Litwin (Jacksonville, Fla.) tallied two hits apiece to lead Wentworth. Five different Colonels each had one hit to close out that category.
Mike Callagee (Emerson, N.J.) was credited with the victory after going four innings of work. The junior only gave up one run on four hits while striking out five. Caleb Eaton (East Hampstead, N.H.) converted a three-inning save to close out the contest.
Kevin Jones (Pembroke, Mass.) picked up the loss as the senior pitched one inning, surrendering two runs on two hits. Additionally, he struck out one and walked two.
The losses end the season for Curry. Wentworth will now await the release of the CCC Baseball Tournament Championship pairings to see its next opponent.
