Baseball Completes Comeback and Walks Off With Victory Over Bridgewater State in Extras, 8-7

MILTON, Mass.John Cave (Tewksbury, Mass.) was the hero for the Colonels as the senior delivered a walk-off single in the bottom of the 11th to give the Curry College baseball team a thrilling 8-7 win over Bridgewater State on Wednesday afternoon at the Jack Vallely Diamond. With the victory, the Colonels now sit at 7-10 overall while the Bears sink to 4-13.

Bridgewater State got on the board in the top of the second with a single through the left side by Randy Frazier (Wareham, Mass.) to score Drew Gentile (Lynn, Mass.). The visitors tacked on another when Alexander Pappas (Lakeville, Mass.) flew out to right, which was deep enough to plate Reed Pike (Bellingham, Mass.) to grab a 2-0 lead.

Curry answered back with two runs of their own half of the bottom of the second. Zach Bowden (Taunton, Mass.) crushed a solo shot to left while later in the frame, Mitchell Carvalho (Cranston, R.I.) drew a bases-loaded walk to score Michael Moreau (Marshfield, Mass.).

The two teams traded tallies in the fourth to remain tied heading into the middle stage of regulation. Pappas connected on a base knock to right as it was deep enough to send Lewis Robinson (New Britain, Conn.) home. In the home half of the frame, Justin Cage (Glendora, Calif.) reached on a fielder's choice and that play would score Dylan Ketterer (Plymouth, Mass.) to tie the game at three.

The Bears were able to break the tie and collected four runs in the fifth. Sean Casey (Braintree, Mass.) flew out to right, which drove in Tyler Morini (Plymouth, Mass.) to break the tie. Robinson followed with a single to second base to score Alex Carey (East Bridgewater, Mass.). Frazier then drew a bases-loaded walk to score the third tally of the frame and Pappas closed things out with an RBI groundout to third to send Pike home.

The Colonels began to chip away at the deficit in the sixth. Cave got things started with a single to left field to plate Carvalho. In the seventh, Cave knocked a single through the left side to score a run while Carvalho cut the gap to one when he scored on a wild pitch.

Curry tallied the equalizer in the seventh when Justin Cage (Glendora, Calif.) hit a single up the middle to score Cave to deadlock the game at seven apiece.

The next scoring opportunity would come in the 11th. After Jack Kallinich (Madison, Conn.) was hit by a pitch to start the inning, Carvalho laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Kallinich into scoring position. Cave then stepped to the plate and connected on the game-winning walk-off single to give the Colonels the comeback victory.

Cave led the way with a 3-for-7 day at the dish with three runs batted in and one run scored for Curry. Morini and Frazier each finished with two hits to pace Bridgewater State.

Zachary Wensley (Raynham, Mass.) picked up the victory on the hill. He tossed two innings of action while only giving up one hit and three walks. The loss was credited to Greg Cavaioli (Leominster, Mass.) going one third of an inning, giving up the game-winning hit.

Curry returns to the field on Thursday with a road contest at Becker at 4:00. Bridgewater State will next play Saturday at Fitchburg State in a doubleheader starting at noon.
