Baseball Falls to No. 23 Endicott in CCC Action

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College baseball team dropped both games of a doubleheader against visiting No. 23 Endicott College in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) baseball action on Sunday afternoon in Milton. The Colonels absorbed a 3-1 loss in the opener and fell in the second game by a final of 11-5. The Gulls improved to 14-3 overall and 4-0 in CCC play while Curry is now 6-10 overall and 3-3 in conference action.

Game One – Endicott 3, Curry 1

The Colonels opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning when Dylan Ketterer (Plymouth, Mass.) flied out to right field, scoring Jack Kallinich (Madison, Conn.).

Endicott tied the contest and grabbed their first lead of the game in the top of the third frame. Brad Rebello (Bellingham, Mass.) got things started with a single to second, which scored Kyle Brennan (Wallingford, Conn.). The Gulls took the lead on a Michael DeDonato (Chelmsford, Mass.) sacrifice fly to center field allowing Matthew McKinley to cross home.

The final run of the contest came in the top of the fourth inning. Kyle Perkins reached on a fielding error, which plated Nickolas Perkins (Nashua, N.H.).

Liam Burke (Westwood, Mass.) went six strong innings for the win improving to 2-1 on the season. Burke surrendered three hits and one run (unearned) while striking out six. Will Bryant (Cumberland, Maine) recorded his seventh save of the season, pitching a scoreless seventh inning. Kevin Jones (Pembroke, Mass.) absorbed the loss, falling to 1-2. Jones allowed four hits and three earned runs. The senior also struck out two and walked two.

Game Two – Endicott 11, Curry 5

In the second game, the Colonels scored the first run early on in the bottom of the first when Tyler Jenkins (East Bridgewater, Mass.) singled to the shortstop to score John Cave (Tewksbury, Mass.).

Endicott answered back with a run of their own in their half of the second. Dan Cacciola (Saugus, Mass.) bunted for a single to score Jacob Thibault (Methuen, Mass.).

Curry then broke the game open, scoring one in the third and three in the fourth. Justin Cage (Glendora, Calif.) singled to left to score Cave to reclaim the lead. Jhonathon Oliveira (Peabody, Mass.) continued the onslaught in the fourth with a single through the right side to plate Ketterer. Oliveira would later score on a wild pitch to give the Colonels a 5-1 lead.

The Gulls would cut the deficit to just one in the fifth inning, tallying three runs. Casciano doubled to right field to score Rebello. Ian Schmidt (Plymouth, Mass.) followed with a single to second base to score DeDonato. Thibault closed the inning when he reached on an error by the third baseman, scoring Casciano.

Endicott tied the contest in the sixth on a sacrifice fly to right and would later grab the lead on RBI singles from DeDonato and Casciano in the eighth. The Gulls closed the contest in impressive fashion with Brennan crushing a grand slam to right field to give Endicott the six-run victory.

Cooper Anibal (Bedford, N.H.) picked up the win (2-0) allowing no hits while striking out two and walking one. Matt Hailey (Weymouth, Mass.) was credited with the loss, giving up six runs on six hits (all earned), and striking out one.

The Colonels return to action on Wednesday, hosting Bridgewater State for a single game beginning at 3:30 p.m., while the Gulls host St. Joseph's (Me.) on Tuesday in a non-conference game starting at 4:00 p.m.
