Baseball Outlasted By Johnson & Wales, 17-9

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Curry College baseball team was outlasted by Johnson & Wales University on Saturday afternoon in a 17-9 final in non-conference action. The two teams combined for 26 runs on 39 hits. With the win, the Wildcats improved to 10-6 while the Colonels slip to 5-7 with the setback.

Of Note:

Johnson & Wales had a 10-2 lead after three innings thanks to a couple of Curry miscues. A wild pitch scored Joe Maracic in the second. Later in that inning, Rob Ballinger scored on an Edison Mercado single and Colby Greenhalgh came around on a fielding error.

After Curry scored twice in the top of the third inning, Rich Bourdeau and Greenhalgh had RBI doubles in the bottom half of the inning. A throwing error allowed Raimiel Rodriguez and Greenhalgh to score.

Ten runs were enough for JWU starter Keith Grant to get his fifth win of the year. He lasted 5.1 innings, giving up seven runs on 10 hits with five strikeouts. Kevin Jones (Pembroke, Mass.) was tabbed with the loss, going two and one-third innings. He gave up seven runs on eight hits while walking two

Every starting position player on both teams picked up at least one hit. Maracic topped all players with a career-high five hits. Bourdeau went 4 for 6 with three runs and three RBIs. Curry shortstop Adam Duarte (East Providence, R.I.) picked up a team-best four hits.

Curry concludes a five-game road trip on Tuesday, April 3 at Fisher College at 7:00 p.m. The Wildcats are on the road for four games next week, starting with a 4 p.m. contest at Wesleyan on Wednesday.
