Baseball Swept By Western New England In CCC Action

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College baseball team was swept in a conference doubleheader by Western New England on Wednesday afternoon at the Jack Vallely Diamond. The Golden Bears took game one by a 3-1 final and then completed the sweep with a 6-4 victory in the nightcap. Western New England moves to 15-8 overall and 6-4 in the CCC. Curry falls to 6-14 overall and 3-3 in conference action.

GAME ONE

Western New England opened the game scoring in the fourth frame, tallying their three runs. Erik Lacaire (Worcester, Mass.) got things started with an RBI single which plated Daniel Morin (Salem, N.H.) to go up 1-0. The inning continued when Joe Cassella (Wallingford, Conn.) knocked in two with a two-RBI single to center. The base knock scored Lacaire and Alex Loparco (Riverside, Conn.) to make it 3-0.

Curry got on the board in the bottom of the seventh after Adam Duarte (East Providence, R.I.) reached on a fielder's choice. The fielder's choice scored Nick Crivello (Millville, Mass.) as the Colonels fell in game one by a 3-1 final.

Michael Moreau (Marshfield, Mass.) paced Curry in game one, going 2-for-3 at the dish. Alex McLean (Eliot, Maine), Tyler Jenkins (East Bridgewater, Mass.) and John Cave (Tewksbury, Mass.) each recorded one hit apiece.

Cassella led the Golden Bears with a 2-for-3 opening game at the plate with two runs batted in. Lacaire and Morin recorded the other two hits for the visitors.

Jake Kawiecki (Burlington, Conn.) picked up the win on the hill for Western New England. He tossed six innings of shutout ball, only allowing four hits. He struck out four and walked one to record the win. Jaques Boilard (Brimfield, Mass.) picked up the save, closing out the final inning of play.

David Griffin (Hanover, Mass.) was credited the loss on the mound. The junior registered a complete seven innings of work while giving up three runs on four hits while walking none and striking out seven.

GAME TWO

The nightcap started with a two-run homer by Morin as he drove the pitch to deep right field and gone to give the Golden Bears a 2-0 lead.

Morin got back in the action in the second with an RBI single to right to plate Cassella to make it 3-0.

But Curry responded in the bottom of the fourth with four runs to grab the lead. Jared Keller (Oxford, Conn.) opened the frame with an RBI single to right to score Vincent LoPriore (Boston, Mass.). Duarte then pitched in with an RBI double to plate Crivello. A sacrifice fly by McLean and a single through the right side by Justin Cage (Glendora, Calif.) allowed the Colonels to grab a one run advantage, 4-3.

Western New England answered back in their half of the fifth with two runs, reclaiming the lead 5-4. Ben LaCroix (Branford, Conn.) registered an RBI single to left center to plate Morin and then LaCroix would add an insurance run when he scored on a wild pitch to make the final score, 6-4.

Morin led all players in game two at the plate, going a perfect 4-for-4 with three runs batted in and three runs scored. LaCroix and Aaron Rios (Stratford, Conn.) were the other two Golden Bears with multiple hits in the nightcap, registering two each.

McLean and Crivello paced Curry with two hits each in the loss. Cage, Duarte and Keller had one hit apiece to close the column for the Colonels.

Bob Hamel (Southwick, Mass.) registered the win for Western New England. He went three and a third innings while giving up just one hit. He also struck out four and walked one.

Kevin Jones (Pembroke, Mass.) was credited with the loss, going four and two thirds innings. He surrendered three runs on five hits while striking out six.

Curry returns to action on Saturday for a doubleheader at Gordon beginning at noon. Western New England will next play Thursday in a road contest at UMass.-Dartmouth at 3:30 p.m.
