Milton, Mass. – The Curry College baseball team fell 6-2 to visiting non-conference opponent Amherst College Wednesday afternoon in Milton. The Colonels drop to 8-19 on the season while Amherst improves to 17-7.
Amherst wasted no time grabbing the lead, scoring a run in each of the three innings. Sophomore Max Steinhorn (Bethesda, Md.) started things in the first reaching on a bunt hit up the first baseline. He advanced on a single and ground out respectively, and came across to open the scoring on an RBI ground out from classmate Ariel Kenney (Chula Vista, Calf.) to the third baseman.
In the second inning, senior Dave Cunningham (Arlington, Mass.) needed only one swing to touch all the bases after he put a homerun over the right field wall. Steinhorn got things started up again in the third with another single and tagged up and advanced on an error to make it to third before Kenney got caught in a rundown, allowing Steinhorn to come across before Kenney was cut down.
Another run wasn't scored until the fifth inning with Steinhorn again registering a hit to start things. He took a base on an overthrow and eventually came across on a single to right field off the bat of junior Yanni Thanopoulos (Highland, Calif.). Thanopoulos took two bases on a fielders' choice and error and only needed a ground out from Kenney to come across to put them up by five after five and a half.
The Colonels wasted no time formulating a response as sophomore Will de la Cruz (Bronx, N.Y.) reached on a fielder's choice then advanced on a walk from senior Tim Lathrop (Colchester, Conn.). Both runners moved up a base on a wild pitch and Cruz ran the final 90 feet as a result of senior John Arens (Milton, Mass.) reaching on an error. Classmate Kyle Connors (Stoughton, Mass.) walked to load the bases and Lathrop scampered home after another wild pitch to make the score 5-2 after five full.
Junior Anthony Spina (Brooklyn, N.Y.) delivered an insurance home run to center field and the 6-2 score went final. Freshman Brandon Bercovitz (West Bridgewater, Mass.) was handed the loss after going five full innings allowing all five earned runs on eight hits while striking out a pair. Junior Chris Baldi earned the win finishing an inning and a third yielding no runs and two hits.
The Colonels return to action on Friday afternoon as they host out-of-conference opponent Suffolk University for a first pitch scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Amherst plays again on Friday afternoon as well, as they travel to conference foe Newbury College for a 4 p.m. start.
