Baseball Drops Both Games of a Doubleheader with Oglethorpe University

ATLANTA, Ga. – The Curry College baseball team was swept in a doubleheader against host Oglethorpe University on Saturday afternoon in Atlanta. The Stormy Petrels took the first game by a 4-1 score and won the second game 7-2 to finish the day 4-0 on the season while the Colonels dropped to 0-3.

GAME 1

The opening game was a pitcher's duel through the first three innings with both teams totaling only three hits. Senior John Arens (Milton, Mass.) started the inning with a single and advanced to third on a double from senior Phil Perez (West Covina, Calif.) Freshman Ben Lary (Kennebunk, Maine) grounded out to the second baseman, plating Arens to break the scoreless tie.

It wasn't until two innings later when Oglethorpe responded, starting the inning with two consecutive singles and a sacrifice bunt to put runners in scoring position. Sophomore Dee Kelly (Cumming, Ga.) scored first after senior Spencer Transue (Cumming, Ga.) grounded out to shortstop. Junior Gabe Selochan (Odessa, Fla.) came around on a single to centerfield off the bat of sophomore Jarvis Miller (Nashville, Tenn.) to put the Stormy Petrels in the lead 2-1. Sophomore Adrian Celata (Duluth, Ga.) would score two more times, once after a solo homerun in the sixth and again in the eighth to put the final score at 4-1.

Freshman Matt Fogarty (Millis, Mass.) was pinned with the loss after a five inning effort giving up six hits and three earned while striking out six. Sophomore Matt Davis (Coral Springs, Fla.) earned the win going six full innings allowing five hits and one earned run while fanning five. Junior Sam Traxler (Charlotte, N.C.) recorded the save in three innings work, striking out three.

GAME 2

The second game started just like the first, this time three and a half innings were played before a run was scored. After three consecutive singles to load the bases, freshman Andrew Mink (Clearwater, Fla.) delivered another single to bring in junior Austin Ferlita (Odessa, Fla.) and advance the other runners. Selochan followed with a single to bring in two more runs and Mink finally touched all the bases after he was hit in by Miller two batters later.

The Colonels would not wait to respond however, as Fogarty stepped up to the plate and smashed a homerun to bring in senior Kyle Connors (Stoughton, Mass.) who singled to start the inning. However, those would be the only runs they would get in the inning, and the score was 4-2 after five full.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Stormy Petrels strung together a couple hits and a walk to again load the bases for Miller. He was hit with a pitch which brought in Mink who began the inning with a single. Junior Brandon Fish (Marietta, Ga.) followed with a two RBI double to put the score up to 7-2, the eventual final score.

Junior Alex McLean (Elliot, Maine) was pinned with the loss after going three full innings giving up four earned runs on five hits. Senior Kyle Mitchell (Conyers, Ga.) recorded the win finishing four innings letting up two earned runs on five hits while striking out four batters.
