Baseball Drops a Pair to Visiting Conference Rival Gordon, 6-0 and 7-5

MILTON, Mass. – Curry College dropped both games of a doubleheader against visiting Gordon College in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) baseball action Friday afternoon in Milton. The Colonels absorbed a 6-0 loss in the opener, and dropped the second game by a final of 7-5. The Fighting Scots improved to 9-8 overall and 4-4 in CCC play while Curry is now 6-13 overall and 1-7 in conference action.

GAME ONE

Gordon got all the runs it would need in the top of the third inning. The Fighting Scots took advantage of three Colonels' errors in the frame, and pulled off a successful double steal to score three runs. The only RBI hit came off the bat of junior Mark Fitzgerald (Simi Valley, Calif.), whose single up the middle plated sophomore Cody Davey (Plymouth, Mass.). Gordon later added a single run in fifth and two more in the seventh to close out the scoring.

Sophomore Alex Smith (Wethersfield, Conn.) and Davey each collected two hits while Smith tallied a pair of RBI. Sophomore Scott Hall (Weymouth, Mass.) picked up the win, tossing 5 1/3 innings, allowing four hits and two walks while striking out two.

Curry got a pair of hits from juniors Tanner Givens (Hamden, Conn.) and Travis Levesque (Middleboro, Mass.). Freshman Ben Carrasco (San Francisco, Calif.) took the loss, pitching six innings, surrendering seven hits, one walk and two earned runs, while fanning three.

GAME TWO

In the nightcap, the Fighting Scots built a 6-1 lead after 3 ½ innings, then hung on for the 7-5 win. Gordon's three-run first inning culminated with an RBI single from Smith that brought home junior Alonzo Martinez (El Paso, Texas). In a three-run fourth inning, the big blow was a run-scoring double off the bat of Fitzgerald. Curry posted a single run in the bottom of the second, thanks to an RBI double from junior Derek Pizarro (Cambridge, Mass.) that scored junior Matt Warren (Wilbraham, Mass.).

The Colonels chipped away with single runs in the fifth and sixth innings, cutting the deficit to 6-3. The Fighting Scots responded by plating an insurance run in the top of the seventh. In the bottom of the frame, Curry sophomore Philip Perez (West Covina, Calif.) brought his team to within two runs, driving in a pair with a double to right field. But the hosts could get no closer.

Sophomore Eric Walker (Danvers, Mass.) went 3-for-5 with two runs scored. Freshman Roland LaPointe (Leominster, Mass.) picked up the win, giving up six hits, a walk and one earned run over six innings of work. He struck out three.

Junior R.J. McCann (Brockton, Mass.) went 3-for-4 for the Colonels, while Pizarro went 2-for-3 with two RBI. Junior Thomas Fitzpatrick (South Boston, Mass.) absorbed the loss, allowing nine hits, one walk and five earned runs while striking out two in four innings of work.

The Colonels return to action on Saturday, hosting CCC rival Wentworth for a doubleheader beginning at 12:00 p.m., while the Fighting Scots host Eastern Nazarene also on Saturday in a conference twin bill starting at 1:00 p.m.
