Baseball Edged by Visiting Salve Regina in a Pair of CCC Contests

MILTON, Mass. – Curry College dropped both games of a doubleheader against visiting Salve Regina in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) baseball action Monday night in Milton. The Colonels absorbed a 7-4 loss in nine innings in the opener, and came up short in the second game, 2-1. Curry is now 6-20-2 on the season (4-10 CCC), while the Seahawks now stand at 26-7 (12-2 CCC).

GAME ONE

In the opener, both teams put a run on the board in the first inning. Salve Regina sophomore Joe Haley (North Kingstown, R.I.) hit an RBI single to left, while Colonels’ senior Sam Barron (Hadley, Mass.) recorded an RBI double to left center.

After a scoreless second frame, the Seahawks took a 2-1 lead in the third after junior Tyler Colby (Easton, Conn.) doubled to left to bring home a run.

In the bottom of the third inning, Curry scored three runs on five hits to claim a 4-2 edge. In the following frame, Salve Regina tied the game after freshman Ryan Sweenor (South Kingston, R.I.) hit a two RBI double to right center.

Both teams remained scoreless until the ninth when the Seahawks took a three run lead (7-4) to cap off the scoring. The inning was highlighted by a two RBI double off the bat junior Dominic Di Sano (Central Falls, R.I.).

Freshman Sean Healy (Wakefield, R.I.) got the start for Salve Regina, allowing four earned runs on nine hits in five innings on the mound. Junior Kevin Lambert (Fairfield, Conn.) picked up the win (3-0), surrendering two hits in 2.1 innings pitched.

Sophomore Chris Kingsley (Middleboro, Mass.) started on the mound for the Colonels, giving up four earned runs on two hits in 3.1 innings of work. Classmate Travis Levesque (Middleboro, Mass.) absorbed the loss (0-3), allowing three earned runs on five hits in 2.2 innings on the mound.

GAME TWO

In the second game, both teams each scored a run in the first inning again. Di Sano recorded an RBI in the top of the frame, while Barron hit an RBI single to right to tie the score at 1-1.

Both teams held each other scoreless in the pitcher’s duel until the seventh inning.

In the seventh frame, Colby brought home the final run of the game with a single to left center. In the bottom of the inning, Curry had a runner on second base with one out but was unable to capitalize, accounting for the final score, 2-1.

Senior Daniel Kehew (Portsmouth, R.I.) went the distance and picked up the win, improving to 3-1 on the season. Kehew surrendered one run on five hits while striking out three.

Senior Corey Pierro (Essex, Mass.) also went the distance, absorbing the loss and falling to 1-3. Pierro gave up two earned runs on five hits while striking out five.

Both teams return to action on Friday, as the Colonels host Framingham State in a non-conference single game beginning at 3:30 p.m. The Seahawks travel to Brandeis for a non-conference single game starting at 3:00 p.m.
