MILTON, Mass. – Curry College and Eastern Nazarene College split a doubleheader in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) baseball action Monday afternoon in Milton. The Colonels grabbed the opener, 4-0, while the Lions bounced back in the nightcap, 5-2. Curry now stands at 6-14-2 overall and 4-6 in CCC action. Eastern Nazarene is now 10-18 overall and 2-10 in league play.

GAME ONE

After two scoreless innings, the Colonels plated a pair of runs in both the third and fourth. Curry got two runs on a throwing error in the third, then freshman Tim Lathrop and sophomore Derek Pizarro stroked back-to-back RBI singles in the fourth off of Lions’ starter Anthony Berroa.

Colonels’ sophomore starter Thomas Fitzpatrick (3-2) held the Eastern Nazarene offense at bay, tossing a complete-game two-hit shutout. He allowed one walk while striking out seven. Berroa (0-3) surrendered nine hits over his six innings of work, and struck out three, but all four of the runs he allowed were unearned.

Lathrop (2 for 3) and Pizarro (2 for 2) notched the only multi-hit efforts in the opener.

GAME TWO

The Lions got all the offense they would need in the top of the second, with freshman Justin Wagner and sophomore Rocco Martinelli each driving in a run, and a third crossing the plate on a balk by Curry senior starter Zach Walker.

Sophomores E.J. Estrada and Ryan Garza smacked RBI singles in the fourth and seventh innings, respectively, to extend Eastern Nazarene’s advantage to 5-0.

Curry finally dented the scoreboard in the bottom of the seventh, thanks to an RBI double by senior Matt Rodriguez and a run-scoring single by junior Matt O’Neill. But that would be as close as the Colonels would come.

Freshman Brad Hampton (1-3) went the distance in picking up his first win of the season. He allowed five hits, one walk and two earned runs while striking out four over seven innings. Walker (1-1) absorbed the loss, giving up 10 hits, two walks and three earned runs while striking out two in his seven innings of work.

Wagner went 3 for 3 with an RBI and two runs scored. Berroa and Garza each collected a pair of hits. Rodriguez led the Curry offense with a pair of hits, an RBI and a run scored.

Curry is back in action on Tuesday, hosting Babson in a non-conference game at 3:30 p.m. Eastern Nazarene resumes play on Wednesday, traveling to Framingham State for a non-conference tilt at 3:30 p.m.
