Baseball Absorbs a 9-2 Non-Conference Loss at Keene State

KEENE, N.H. – Senior Nick Vita (Spofford, N.H.) and freshman Brett Dootson (Marlborough, Conn.) knocked in three runs each and senior Kyle Underwood (Campton, N.H.) settled down after a shaky start to pitch five and two-thirds innings of four hit ball in Keene State College’s 9-2 non-conference baseball win over Curry College at Owl Athletic Complex on Tuesday.

Keene State (10-14) has won four of its last five games.  Curry College (5-10-2) had dropped six of its last seven games.

Trailing 1-0, Keene State tied the game in the bottom of the second inning on a RBI single to left by freshman Cody Dube (Windham, Maine).

The Owls scored two runs in the third without getting a hit.  Junior Ray Carmel (Waterford, N.Y.), who reached on an error, came around to score on a ground out and senior Greg Bates (Salem, N.H.), who walked, scored on a wild pitch.

KSC added two more in the fifth to go up 5-1.  Vita brought in one run with a ground out and junior Andrew Gummow (Brookline, Mass.) had an RBI single.

The Owls broke the game open with a four-run seventh inning to take a 9-1 lead.  Vita had an RBI single and Dootson blasted a three-run home run, his first college bomb, over the fence in right-center field.

Bates and Dube each had two hits for the Owls.

Senior Sam Barron (Hadley, Mass.) and sophomore Tanner Givens (Hamden, Conn.) each had two hits for the Colonels.

After giving up a run in the top of the first, Underwood settled down to pick up his first win of the season.

Freshman Slayd Dore (West Ossipee, N.H.) tossed the final 3.1 innings to get his first save of the season.  He had two strikeouts and didn’t issue a walk.

Junior Matt O’Neill (Milton, Mass.) started for Curry and took the loss. He gave ups five runs on just one hit with one strikeout and five walks.

There were a combined seven hit-by-pitches in the game. (Recap courtesy of KSC Sports Information)
