Baseball Goes 1-4 in First Half of Spring Break Trip
WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The Curry College Baseball Team went 1-4 in its first five games during Spring Break.
On Saturday, March 13, Rowan University defeated the Colonels, 6-5. Rowan improved to 4-3, while Curry opened its season at 0-1. Right hander Ben Miller picked up the win in relief. Righty John O’Hara pitched a scoreless ninth inning for his first save. Left hander Mike Hughes took the loss for the Colonels. For Curry, left fielder Tim Sweeney went 2-for-4 with a one run scored and a double. Centerfielder Jesse Bruinsma recorded one RBI and one run scored. Second baseman David Stevens had one hit (two at bats), one run scored and a double. Designated hitter Matt Rodriguez contributed with a double and a RBI. Right fielder Matt Drew knocked in one run, while shorstop Carlos Cornejo and catcher Brad Hawn each scored once.
On Sunday, March 14, Bowdoin College opened its 2010 campaign with a sweep of Curry. The Polar Bears (2-0) claimed game one 17-4 before taking a 6-2 win in game two. The Colonels fell to 0-3. Adam Marquit highlighted the game one victory, hitting for the cycle and connecting on his first career home run. Reid Auger, Brendan Garner, Dan Findley and Dan Hicks also went deep for Bowdoin in the victory. Tim Welch tossed a solid five innings with four strikeouts and only allowing six hits. The Polar Bears completed the sweep in game two behind pitcher Oliver Van Zant, who tossed 6.1 no-hit innings before Curry was able to break through. R.J. Shea tossed a scoreless seventh to close out the contest.
On Monday, March 15, the Colonels got in the win column, capturing the nightcap of a doubleheader with Transylvania University, 7-6, after dropping the opener, 5-3. The Pioneers fell to 6-3 after losing the second game while Curry improved to 1-4. The Colonels’ Hawn went 2-for-3 with a walk. Tony Luciani knocked in a run, as did Bruinsma and Rick Vail. Miles Galvin started, pitched five innings and took the loss before giving way to Hemans. The Pioneers nearly rallied to sweep the doubleheader, coming back from a 7-2 deficit to climb within a run, 7-6, in the sixth inning. Bruinsma went 3-for-3 and scored twice. Hawn went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Luciani was 2-for-4 with two RBI. Sweeney also knocked in a run. Hughes started and recorded the victory. Brian Pipines came on in the fifth, followed by Hemans, who recorded the save over the final 1 2/3 innings.
