Spring 2019 - SAAC Welcomes In Special Olympics Massachusetts Basketball Teams

The Curry College Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) hosted five Special Olympics Massachusetts Basketball teams in Katz Gymnasium on Sunday, February 24.

"Nothing was more rewarding than being a part of the Special Olympics Basketball day," said men's soccer freshman and SAAC member Nick Corso (Exeter, R.I.). "It warmed my heart to see all the smiles and laughter on everyone's faces. Knowing I might have made a little impact on their day was a great moment," said Corso.

Katz Gymnasium was buzzing with over 25 SAAC volunteers helping with registration, being team liaisons, officiating, running the scorer's table, and leading cheers.

"It was a great day watching, helping, and cheering on these phenomenal athletes," said women's lacrosse junior and SAAC member Abby Dubel (Wolfeboro, N.H.). "It was such a fun, lively crowd which made the experience even better for everyone involved," said Dubel.

Special Olympics teams included the Communitas Warriors, BR Bears, Brookline Bobcats, BR Trojans, and BR Wildcats. These games were highly contested with one game even going into a two-minute overtime period to determine a winner. In addition to the games, Special Olympians and SAAC members danced to the Cha Cha Slide in between a game, participated in the wave that went around the gymnasium, and cheered on all the other teams during their breaks.

"It was a tremendous job by our Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, the planning and execution across all departments was great," said SAAC Advisor and men's soccer coach Pete Mendel. "Working with Special Olympics Massachusetts is a real treat for us and something our student-athletes embraced. Seeing so many of our athletic teams showing up led to a great environment for these great athletes. The smiles and competition throughout the day is something we will look to replicate in the future," said Mendel.

Fall 2017 - "Pay It Forward" Day

On Wednesday, November 15,  Pay It Forward Day returned to the Curry College Community. Members of the Curry College Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) comprised of Athletes from teams all across campus continued the November tradition for the fourth straight year. "Pay It Forward" Day is a simple concept of spreading some good will and smiles across campus by doing random acts of kindness and urging people to do the same.

In the morning student-athletes served free Dunkin Donuts coffee and munchkins in the Hafer Academic Building to the delight of many faculty, staff, and students. The message was simple: have a great day and do something nice for someone else today. If you were lucky, you also got to ride on the Pay It Forward Day shuttle which picked students up across campus and brought you to class, or breakfast. Curry SAAC President Bianca Simeone (Women’s Lacrosse) who drove the shuttle said, “Putting aside a few hours of my time for Pay It Forward Day was refreshing. Driving students all morning was great, and I met a bunch of new people who were all very appreciative for the ride.”

Throughout the day SAAC members handed out cards encouraging everyone to do something nice for someone else. The back of the cards gave suggestions on random acts of kindness people could do around campus. Later that morning as a campus-wide staff meeting ended SAAC members handed out individual Thank You cards to members of the Curry community and thanked them for their dedication to the campus.

In the afternoon the second group of student-athletes handed out single carnations to people on campus. Hoping to simply brighten someone's day. SAAC members also held doors across campus, complimented people and wished them a wonderful day.

Curry SAAC member Claudio Orsini (Men’s Soccer) said, "On Pay It Forward Day, there was just an energy that was felt by everyone involved. It was such a great feeling to put a smile on someone’s face with a simple act.”

Student-Athlete Advisory Committees (SAAC's)

A Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) is a committee made up of student-athletes assembled to provide insight on the student-athlete experience. The SAAC also offers input on the rules, regulations and polices that affect student-athletes' lives on NCAA member institution campuses.

Presently, there are separate national SAACs for NCAA Divisions I, II and III. NCAA legislation mandates that all member institutions have SAACs on their respective campuses. Further, NCAA legislation requires that all member conferences have SAACs.

The information that follows will assist you in understanding how the network of SAACs, from individual campus committees to the conference and/or national committees, interact and support one another to shape intercollegiate athletics policy and enhance the student-athlete experience.

History of the NCAA Student-Athlete Advisory Committee

An Association-wide SAAC was adopted at the 1989 NCAA Convention and was formed primarily to review and offer student-athlete input on NCAA activities and proposed legislation that affected student-athlete welfare.

The initial national committee was comprised of student-athletes from all membership divisions for the purpose of ensuring that the student-athlete voice was one that accounted for the myriad of educational and athletics experiences of both female and male student-athletes at all NCAA member institutions. In August 1997, the NCAA federated along divisional lines. The federation caused the SAAC to expand to three SAACs representing NCAA Divisions I, II and III.

Each national divisional committee is comprised of both female and male student-athletes charged with the responsibility of assisting in the review of NCAA proposed legislation and representing the voice of the student-athlete in the NCAA governance structure. This is accomplished by providing student-athlete input on issues related to student-athlete welfare that are division-specific. (Federation has increased student-athlete participation in the governance process of intercollegiate athletics by increasing the number of SAAC members from the former Association-wide committee of 28 student-athletes to a sum total of 79 members serving on the national Divisions I, II, and III committees).

The input of the respective Divisions I, II and III SAACs continues to be sought by a variety of constituencies within the Association. Student-athlete committee members have the opportunity to speak with their respective NCAA Management Councils, and the Divisions II and III SAACs continue to speak to legislative issues on the NCAA Convention floor.

National SAACs (Divisions I, II and III) at a glance:

• Generate a student-athlete voice within the NCAA structure.
• Solicit student-athlete response to proposed NCAA legislation.
• Recommend potential NCAA legislation.
• Review, react and comment to the governance structure on legislation, activities and subjects of interest.
• Actively participate in the administrative process of athletics programs and the NCAA.
• Promote a positive student-athlete image.

Mission Statement of the National SAACs

"The mission of the National Collegiate Athletic Association Student-Athlete Advisory Committee is to enhance the total student-athlete experience by promoting opportunity, protecting student-athlete welfare and fostering a positive student-athlete image."
