Athletic Department Announces Annual Award Recipients

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College Athletic Department announced its award recipients for the 2017-18 academic year on Friday, May 4 at the 49th Annual Awards Recognition Ceremony.

Alex Corvese (Cranston, R.I.) of the football team was named the Male Athlete of the Year. Corvese had a final season for the ages as he was named the Commonwealth Coast Football Co-Offensive Player of the Year after he led the conference in multiple categories. He led the league in passing yards per game (224.4), tied for first in passing touchdowns (22). The quarterback also led the league in passing yards (2244), completion percentage (65.8%) and ranked second in efficiency with a 147.1 rating. On the ground, Corvese averaged 51.6 yards per game to rank fifth in the league. He also led the conference with 11 rushing touchdowns. Corvese was named the CCC Football Offensive Player of the Week five times this season and was honored twice as the ECAC Division III North Offensive Player of the Week. Additionally, he was named to the All-New England Team and led Curry to an 8-3 record, including a berth to the New England Bowl.

Nicole Rice (Woburn, Mass.) of women's basketball and volleyball was awarded the Female Athlete of the Year honor. Rice was a captain on both teams and broke a school record during her senior campaign. With 177 total blocks, she is now the program's all-time leader in that category. During her final season on the hardwood, she averaged eight points and 5.8 rebounds per game. She appeared in all 26 games, making 25 starts. On the volleyball court, Rice played in 27 matches and registered a team-high 248 kills. Additionally, she led the team sigh 55 blocks (42 solo, 13 assists).

Ryan Fitzgerald (Cary, N.C.) of the hockey team took home the Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year award. On the ice this season, Fitzgerald played in 16 games and tallied nine points on three goals and six assists. His academic accolades include being a two-time Academic All-Conference Team selection and currently has a perfect 4.0-grade point average as a management major.

Jessica Saluti (Braintree, Mass.) of the softball team was named the Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year. The senior management major currently holds a 3.92 GPA. On the field this season, the captain played in 25 games and amassed a .214 batting average (12-for-56) with four doubles and 11 runs batted in. She has been a two-time Academic All-Conference Team selection.

The Colonel Pride awards are given annually to a student-athlete and a supporter of Curry Athletics who exemplifies Colonel Pride. This years' student-athlete award recipients were Bianca Simeone (Cranston, R.I.) of the women's lacrosse team and Steven Grogan (Forestdale, Mass.) of football. The Colonel Pride award for a supporter was given to Stephanie Alliette of Residence Life.
